The Meanings Behind The Shorthand Collection

I was 21 when I first learnt shorthand. Training to be a journalist it was one of the key exams we had to pass to graduate. 100 words a minute, 100% accurate in under 16 weeks.

As a class we drilled symbols and letters endlessly. Every night decamping from our classroom to Revolution, sitting in the bar with a drink hoping it might make the work go smoother. We got faster, started to dream in shorthand and it became an automatic skill. By the time I became a journalist I was no longer only working in shorthand - it was a great ice breaker for celeb interviews - but writing shopping lists and notes in it. Just like my mam before me, though her's was the harder to learn Pitman, to my Teeline.

It's been years since I worked as a journalist but shorthand is still part of my life. I love its speed and efficiency but mainly its mystery and the beautiful shapes words take when they are transcribed into it.
